Divers enjoying outdoor training in Tallahassee

27 Jul 2016

The eleven-strong team of British divers that are heading over to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are putting the finishing touches to their training in Tallahassee.

The camp is providing the divers with an excellent opportunity to train in similar conditions to the Maria Lenk at the Rio Olympic Park.

One of the key priniciples of the camp is to acclimatise to the outdoor conditions like adverse weather and flood lights.

Divers like Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley and world medallists Jack Laugher, Chris Mears and Rebecca Gallantree are ensuring they are in the best condition for when competition kicks off on 7 August.

For the National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov this is one of the best facilities in the world to prepare for the Olympic Games.

“We’ve just started the second week of the camp. The first week went well and the whole team is in a good place as we move closer to the Olympics. The camp is going very well and the team spirit is very high.

“We are training all aspects of the sport including weights, gymnastic and pool. We have also been testing out ‘dark time training’ three times a week to get the divers used to the change in conditions.

“The training volume is very high at the moment and will be reduced by the end of the camp. The team is approaching the same technical and physical shape as it was by London Europeans. Then next week I expect that we are going to overcome this threshold and approach higher and better form that we have planned for the Games.

“The athletes have managed to enjoy some down time as well to recharge their batteries ahead of another intensive week of training. It was remarkable 'switching over', so the second working week started with greater enthusiasm.”
