Double Silver on Day Four

12 May 2016

Jack Laugher, Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow won silver medals in the 3m Springboard and Men’s 10m Synchro respectively on day four of the LEN European Aquatics Championships.

Daley and Goodfellow continued their good form in 2016 by claiming their first European Championship medal as a pair.

Having earnt an Olympic berth earlier this year at the World Cup, Daley and Goodfellow have continued to go from strength-to-strength and showed their promise again in front of the home crowd.

The pair impressed with their fourth dive the Reverse 3 ½ Somersaults tucked to score 91.80. They went into the final round in first place but dropped marks on their Back 3 ½ Somersaults piked meant they dropped to silver with a final points total of 444.30.

Daley said: “I think we’ve got lots of positives to take from tonight’s performance. Yes we wanted the gold medal and yes it was really close but we’re happy.

“It was the highest score we’ve ever got on our first two dives and we we’re only two points off our highest score and we dropped two of our dives.”

Goodfellow added: “Our partnership is really good, we came together for our first performance at the National Cup at the beginning of the year and our scores have continued to increase each time we compete. There’s room for improvement but the partnership is strong.”

Germany’s Sascha Klein and Patrick Hausding took gold with 445.25 points, the pair have never been beaten in the Men’s 10m Synchro event at European level.

Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gorshkovozov and Maksym Dolgov recorded a score of 429.75 and claimed bronze.

In the Men’s 3m Final, Jack Laugher picked up Great Britain’s third medal, silver, of the LEN European Aquatics Championships.

Laugher scored 473.60 to finish second in the overall rankings to collect his first ever European medal.

Laugher dropped mark on his Inward 3 ½ Somersaults tucked to fall out of the medal berths but he clawed his way back into contention with his Front 2 ½ Somersaults 3 Twists piked with a score of 91.65.

“I feel like I came out really strong, my first two dives were amazing and I felt strong,” Laugher said. “I have an issue where sometimes my calves cramp up, this happened on dive two which then make I dived short on my third dive. It shook me a little but I bounced back.

“I still finished with an ok score and there were some good things in there but a little bit of a disappointment that a slight mishap affected my final position.

“It’s fantastic to have the home crowd, this session has been the most packed so far and it really helps.

“I’ve a positive season so far and that medal will help my confidence. I’ve got things I know I can work on been ready for the Olympic trials in June and then beyond.”

Laugher was joined on the podium by Russia’s Evgenii Kuznetsov who took gold with 497.90 points and bronze was claimed by Ukranian diver Illya Kvasha (463.85).
