British Swimming offers its deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Great Britain swimmer and coach Clive Rushton.

Lancashire-born, Clive competed at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games and, as an international coach, represented Britain at the 1988 Seoul Olympics as well as the 1989 European Championships.

He developed many international swimmers and held senior coaching roles within various nations including Canada and New Zealand.

Clive, aged 69, had been battling cancer and died at home in Indonesia with his wife Martini. He is survived by three children, two step-children and his mother.

Clive was published many times and had an extensive background in coach education and scientific applications to the sport. He was highly regarded by the global swimming community.

Commenting on the loss, British coach Bill Furniss said: “This is a sad loss to the swimming world. Clive was one of the sport’s original thinkers and innovators, and always had time for people. He will be sadly missed by the coaching fraternity and our thoughts are with Clive’s family and friends.”
