Belonogoff bags breaststroke gold at Euro Juniors

Tatiana Belonogoff has become Britain's first swimming gold medalist of the European Junior Championships in Helsinki.

In a close race the 16 year old managed to hold off Germany's Anna Ellendt and Slovakian Tina Celik to take the gold in the 50m breaststroke event.

Team mate Katie Robertson, who had qualified via a swim-off, finished in fifth position.

Elsewhere on day one European Junior record holder Freya Anderson  comfortably qualified for the 100m freestyle final, finishing fastest across the two semis. Ciara Schlosshan and Keanna Macinnes both made it through to the final of the 200m butterfly, Nick Pyle finished second in his 100m backstroke semi in a personal best time and Jacob Peters finished seventh in the 50m butterfly final.

The team's 4 x 100m men's freestyle final saw Lewis Burras,  Harry Constantine, Luke Turley and Archie Goodburn  finish in seventh - with Russia taking gold, Italy silver and Germany bronze. 

Leah Crisp won her heat in the 1500m freestyle , eighth fastest across all the heats and will move on to her final tomorrow.
