British Swimming select 5km Marathon swimmers

16 Jun 2015

Three swimmers have been added to the British Marathon Swimming Team for the World Championships in Kazan, Russia next month.

Caleb Hughes, Tom Allen and Alice Dearing have been selected to compete in the 5km race and join Olympic silver medallist Keri-anne Payne and Olympian Dan Fogg who will swim in the 10km races.

The 5km Marathon swimming event takes place on 25th July at the Kazanka Venue which is along the Kazanka river.

Brtitish Swimming Marathon Swimming Lead Bernie Dietzig said: “Following last weekend’s selection race at Lake Windermere we have now filled the remaining spots for the 5km race in Kazan.

“The conditions were challenging with the water temperature being fairly low but the swimmers stood up to the challenge.  Alice Dearing displayed great determination and relied on her strength and experience to finish as top Brit in the women’s race.

“The men’s race turned into a display of open water racing dynamics with a number of the guys challenging for the selection spots.  Tom Allen took the race out at a solid pace but it was Caleb Hughes who out-swam everyone and finished four seconds ahead of Tom Allen as top Brit and overall winner.

“I am confident that those individuals who qualified for the 5km race in Kazan will be competitive and capable of delivering results.  Having had a significant amount of exposure to the highest level of senior racing within this season, the swimmer’s are ‘race ready’ and well prepared to take on the challenge”.

The additions to the British Marathon Swimming Team are:

Caleb Hughes – National Centre, Loughborough

Tom Allen – City of Swansea Aquatics

Alice Dearing – Royal Wolverhampton School
