British athletes continued their success in the 2014 Mare Nostrum series as round two got underway in Canet.
Jazz Carlin (Swansea University) took gold in the 800m Freestyle setting a new meet record in 8:20.68. Spain's Beatriz Gomez Cortes was second in 8:29.83 and France’s Coralie Balmy was third in 8:32.36.
In one of the closest races of the day Ross Murdoch (University of Stirling) and Adam Peaty (City of Derby) once again showed there was little between them as they went head to head in the 100m Breaststroke.
Peaty qualified fastest in 1:00.43 but it was Murdoch who took the win in 1:00.19, just 0.04 seconds ahead of Peaty (1:00.23). Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki finished third in 1:00.36.
In the 50m Backstroke Georgia Davies (British Gas NTC Loughborough) won silver clocking in at 27.98 just behind Etiene Medeiros (Brazil) in 27.96. Daria-K Ustinova took bronze in 28.24.
In the 50m Freestyle Fran Halsall (British Gas NTC Loughborough) was just outside her season’s best as she claimed bronze in 24.76. Jeanette Ottesen (Denmark) took the gold in 24.40 and Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (Bahrain) took silver in 24.76.
Tom Haffield (City of Cardiff) took bronze in the 400m Individual Medley, touching in at 4:20.05 behind Japan’s Daiya Setto (4:13.06) and Spain’s Marc Sanchez Torrens (4:19.86).
