Britain’s open water swimmers took on the challenging course and world class fields of the FINA 10km World Cup in Setubal, Portugal.
Jack Burnell (British Gas NTC Loughborough) continued to show his development into a world class international open water swimmer with a sixth place finish in 1:52:10 just four seconds off the winner.
Britain also showcased the depth to the team with Caleb Hughes (Hatfield), Tom Allen (Swansea) and Dan Fogg (British Gas NTC Loughborough) finishing in ninth, 12th and 14th respectively.
In the women’s event Danielle Huskisson (University of Stirling) was the first British athlete home in 23rd place in a time of 2:07:03 as the less experienced women’s team continue to develop across the international circuit.
Open Water Swimming lead Bernie Dietzig said: “I was very happy with the men’s results while the women continued to show their development at this level.
“We placed four guys in the top 15 of what was a truly world class field and that is impressive in terms of where the programme is going.
“For both the men and the women this will have been yet another great opportunity to gain valuable experience especially of yet another unique course.
“It is fair to say both the course and conditions were challenging. It was brutal having to contend with the cold temperatures of around 17C as well as its tidal nature but this is very much part of the process we are going through.”
