Opening Day heats success for Brits

It was a busy morning for the Brits on the opening day of the Swimming at the LEN European Aquatics Championships in London with 11 finals and semi-final spots achieved.

A British one-two in the heats of the Men’s 100m Breaststroke saw Adam Peaty and Ross Murdoch both swam under the minute mark to lead the rest of European field into the semi-finals.

Peaty said, “It felt good. I’m in the middle of a really hard block of training so I didn’t really expect to get that time so I’m pleased.

“Home crowd, home pool, all these things come together and really help you swim well.”

Men’s 400m Freestyle saw Stephen Milne book himself a final berth which sees him line up against defending European Champion Velimir Stjepanovic of Serbia.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games Champion, Fran Halsall delivered a strong heat swim to qualify fourth fastest for the Women’s 50m Butterfly semi-finals.

Laura Stephens, also in the 50m Fly, achieved a new British 16 year’s age group record of 27.37.

In the Men’s 100m Backstroke Chris Walker-Hebborn booked himself into the semi-finals after a strong heat swim.

Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott qualify second and third fastest respectively for the Women’s 400m Individual Medley final behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who delivered a Championship record.

Penultimate individual event of the morning the Women’s 200m Backstroke saw both British athletes Kathleen Dawson and Charlotte Evans, progress through to the semis.

Ben Proud was ranked second after the heats of the 50m Butterfly, a semi-final spot awaits him.

To close the morning session the Men’s 4x100m Free Relay team secured the final relay spot for tonight’s final after finishing in eighth.
