Team England’s Ben Proud set a new Games record of 21.45 in the heats of the Men’s 50m Freestyle to qualify fastest into the semi-finals.
After his disqualification in the 50m Butterfly event, Proud was back in individual action on the fifth day of swimming and did not disappoint the crowd to take the touch in the final heat.
Thomas Fannon and David Cumberlidge also of Team England progressed to the next round of the 50m free. Scotland with have two athletes taking to the water in the form of Jack Thorpe and Scott McLay and Northern Ireland’s Calum Bain will round of the home nation interest.
The Women’s 200m Butterfly opened the heats session and Wales’ Alys Thomas set the pace comfortably qualifying fastest for tonight’s final.
Team England will also feature in that final with Games debutants Emily Large and Laura Stephens in the outside lanes and Loughborough-based Charlotte Atkinson (Isle of Man) joins them in search of the medals.
Of the six British men that went in the 200m Backstroke heats, half will return for the final, led out by England’s Luke Greenbank who will swim in lane six.
Wales’ Xavier Castelli secured another finals swim on the Gold Coast and Scotland field Craig McNally.
Stephen Milne (Scotland), Conor Ferguson (Northern Ireland) and Harry Shalamon (Jersey) all finished outside of the top eight.
Para-Swimmer Toni Shaw (Scotland) continued her impressive first outing at a Games as she qualified for the Women’s SB9 100m Breaststroke final.
The semi-finals of the Women’s 50m Backstroke will feature six home nation athletes all vying for a place in the final on the closing day of the swimming competition.
Welsh swimmer Georgia Davies ranked second behind Australia’s Emily Seebohm to book herself lane four in SF1. Harriet West will also represent Wales.
Other British athletes include Anna Maine for Team England, Northern Ireland’s Danielle Hill. Scotland has a pair of athletes racing, Kathleen Dawson and Cassie Wild.
