Hynd cruises through medley heats at Tollcross

Oliver Hynd closed in on the defence of his SM8 200m Individual Medley title as all six British swimmers progressed from the heats on day three of the Glasgow 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships at Tollcross.

The 20-year old is Paralympic, World and European champion in this event and added the Commonwealth title in this pool 12 months ago.

And Hynd booked lane four for tonight’s final with a controlled heat swim, touching in 2:24.50 to win his heat with American Robert Griswold next best with a 2:27.53 American record.

Hannah Russell cruised through to the S12 100m Backstroke final, touching second fastest in 1:10.80.

The 18-year old National Performance Centre swimmer is defending champion in this event and set her world record of 1:06.15 in this pool earlier this season.

Russia’s Darya Stukalova looks set to be the only swimmer capable of pushng Russell tonight as she progressed fastest on 1:08.75.

European champion Andrew Mullen sliced more than a second off his personal best to progress second fastest in the S5 200m Freestyle.

The Glasgow-born 18-year old touched second in his heat in 2:44.55, sailing under the 2:46.27 effort which won him European gold in Eindhoven 12 months ago, as Brazil’s Daniel Dias touched first in 2:36.38.

Sascha Kindred is competing in his seventh IPC World Championships in Glasgow and put in a solid morning swim, progressing third fastest for the S6 50m Butterfly in 32.97.

In contrast, 16-year old Thomas Hamer is making his World Championship debut and booked a spot in the S14 200m Freestyle final, ducking under two minutes for the third time in his career to qualify third fastest in 1:59.24.

Paralympic champion Jessica-Jane Applegate also made the S14 200m Freestyle final, progressing second fastest in a PB 2:07.10 as Russia’s Valeriia Shabalina set a world record 2:05.99 to lead the way.
