Para-swimmers bring home 24 medals

4 Mar 2018

It was another successful day for Britain’s para-swimmers as the first Para Swimming World  Series of 2018 came to a close in Copenhagen.

On the third and final day at the Bellahøj swimming stadium in the Danish capital, the Brits won another 6 medals bringing the total to 24.

There was a one-two in the 200m freestyle women with Louise Fiddes (S14) getting gold and Ellie Robinson (S6) taking silver. Zara Mullooly (S10) finished in seventh place in the same event.

Tom Hamer (S14) then added a silver in the 200m freestyle to go with his gold yesterday in the 100m event. Jordan Catchpole (S14) narrowly missed a medal, finishing in fourth place.

Megan Richter (S8) also picked up her second medal of the series with a silver in the 100m backstroke, a feat matched by Jordan Catchpole (S14) in the men’s event.

Maisie Summers-Newton (SM6) picked up her second silver in the 200M IM with team mates Louise Fiddes (SM14) finishing in fourth and Toni Shaw (SM9) in sixth.

In the Men's 200M IM Jordan Catchpole (SM14) finished sixth and Conner Morrison (SM14) seventh.

During the meet in Copenhagen Ollie Hynd was reclassified from an S8 to S9 by the International Paralympic Committee. The decision was protested by British Swimming, but after further testing the reclassification stood.

The 23-year-old, who has three Paralympic titles from London and Rio will however remain in the SB8 classification for breaststroke events.

Ollie said: “Over the next few weeks, myself and the great team around me will be focusing on the performance framework that will give me continued success to Tokyo 2020 and beyond.”

Chris Furber, British Para-swimming National Performance Director, said: “It is clear that there will be challenges with this and we won't know the full worldwide implications until maybe next year."

"However, we welcome anything which brings greater consistency to the classification process.”

Jonathan Fox, Matt Wylie and Jacob Leach were all due to be reassessed in Copenhagen, but this will now take place at an event later in the year.
